Healing Hatha Yoga Classes, Retreats Group sound therapy and Yoga Nidra

Hello!

I’m Alison Scanlan, and I’ve been on a transformative journey with Yoga for over 40 years. My love for Yoga led me to the magical island of Bali, where I completed my teacher training in 2023. Yoga has not only been a form of exercise for me but also a path to mindfulness, spiritual awakening, and holistic well-being.

Expanding Horizons

While my initial journey started with Yoga, I’ve been fortunate to broaden my skills further. This year, I commenced training in Integral Sound Healing with The Sound Healing Academy. As part of my Diploma, I will be running Group Sound Therapy sessions.

More about Integral Sound Healing

Integral Sound Healing uses specific instruments, such as : a Tibetan Bowl, hand held drum, wind gong, other instruments, music, voice tones and other vibrations to facilitate healing in the mind, body, spirit and soul.

The science bit – Our brain produces frequencies that synchronise with the frequencies produced by the instruments and this triggers the relaxation response, which allows us to achieve deeper relaxation. Sometimes there may be a release of emotion and the group will be reminded of this prior to the session.

Each session typically lasts between 40-60 minutes and can be done either sitting in a chair or lying on a mat. There is a combination of breathwork, visualisation, meditation and periods of silence. Sometimes the facilitator may use touch or place an instrument on the body (with permission)

Are there any contraindications?

The main contraindications are : Sound Induced Epilepsy, Significant Mental Health Conditions and the non- placement of instruments on the body during the first trimester of pregnancy. The full list of contraindications would be forwarded on to the individual, once an expression of interest has been made to attend a sound bath.

What happens afterwards?

The group are gently guided back to the present and will be shown how to ground themselves. Aftercare advice would include, drinking plenty of water, taking a shower, using the breathing technique taught during the session, practising meditation, singing, humming, listening to music, keeping a journal or using an instrument they may already own.

Yoga Nidra.

I completed my Yoga Nidra training with the amazing Melanie Cooper (January 2024) and plan to offer an online evening session. Watch this space for further details.

What is Yoga Nidra?

Yoga Nidra is a form of guided meditation, known as yogic sleep and the technique teaches us to move gently between wakefulness and sleep. It is usually practised lying down and can be taught on it’s own or as part of a yoga class or sound bath. Anyone can practice yoga nidra but is has immense appeal for those , who struggle to let go, are experiencing sleep deprivation, anxiety, 0r depression. Each session can typically last 25-45 minutes and upon lying down, breathing exercises are commenced and an intention can be set. The participants are then taken through a full body scan and introduced to a list of feelings, images and associations that make them feel safe and well. With regular practice, partcipants can master this technique and perform yoga nidra on their own.

Are there any contraindications?

The main contraindications include significant mental health conditions, significant trauma and significant depression.

As with all of these practices, please contact me to chat further for clarification and advice.

By the bringing together of these various practices, it has facilitated a more comprehensive healing experience during my classes and retreats, uniting the mind, body, and spirit.

The Power of Aromatherapy

Many years ago, I completed a Diploma in Aromatherapy, a discipline that aligns well with my Yoga teachings. I use essential oils to elevate the senses and create a calming environment, enhancing the overall experience during classes and retreats.

Retreats and Classes

I host weekend Yoga retreats in the serene landscapes of Northumberland and offer a unique Day Retreat experience that incorporates Yoga, Sound Healing, and Yoga Nidra. My retreats are designed for both beginners and intermediate Yogis and include a variety of activities. From understanding the purpose of Chakras to an introduction to Yoga Nidra, my retreats offer an enriching experience that transcends conventional Yoga classes. I can also offer 1:1 tuition in the comfort of your own home -try a Yoga class or experience Yoga Nidra.
